Hey everyone. Welcome to the first episode of The Fuelled Triathlete. My name is Andrea, and in today’s episode, I’m going to keep it pretty short and sweet. I just want to introduce myself to you and tell you a little bit about why I decided to start this podcast and about what you can expect.

I’m a Registered Dietitian. I’ve been a Dietitian for almost 10 years now. A lot of that time I have worked in private practice. Right now, I have an online nutrition business and focus specifically on working with endurance athletes. I work with triathletes one-on-one to help them have a better understanding of their nutrition needs, how to eat well on a daily basis to fuel their training so that they can recover faster, they can hit PRs, and they can reach their body composition goals. I help people throughout the year and then also close to race day, helping them figure out a really personalized race day nutrition and hydration plan so that they can do their best that day and feel their best.

I’ve been a triathlete myself for quite some time. I did my first triathlon when I was 16 years old. My dad suggested that I try a local Try-and-tri It was about a 300 meter swim, 10 or 15 kilometer bike, and 3km run. I took about three weeks to train for it and really loved it. I did triathlons in the last couple of years of high school. Then early in university, I was part of my university’s triathlon club and it was really fun. We did a lot of group training together and went to other universities to race.

After that, I did take some time off of triathlons throughout my twenties, but really got back into the sport in the last couple of years and trained for my first Ironman distance race, which I completed a couple months ago. It was the Barrelman Triathlon in Niagara, Ontario. That was a really awesome experience to be able to do that.

I started this podcast to be able to help more triathletes understand how nutrition can be such a game changer when it comes to how you feel and how you perform as a triathlete.  When I first got into triathlons, this was before I started studying nutrition and became a dietitian. Back then I made a lot of mistakes. I really didn’t know how to fuel my body at all. I was really fearful of carbohydrates. I didn’t understand what my body needed compared to maybe some of my friends who were more sedentary needed. And I suffered from that. I remember having so many cravings late at night for sugar and carbs because I wasn’t fueling my body. I wasn’t recovering as well as I could be. I was feeling sore all the time. I was like falling asleep in class. So I’ve now after that went to school to become a dietician, I’ve done more education in sports nutrition, and worked with so many athletes. I just really want to help people understand how to do better than I did when I first started.

This podcast is really going to cover so many different topics on nutrition. The next couple of episodes I have coming out are about recovery nutrition, how to solve your Runner’s Trots and mistakes to avoid when cab loading. But we’re going to cover so much through this. We’re going to talk about hydration, how to calculate your sweat rate, what to eat before workouts, all macronutrients, micronutrients, electrolytes, etc. If you have suggestions and topics you want me to cover, and you can definitely contact me and let me know what you would like to learn. My goal with these podcasts are to keep them not too crazy long. I’d love to keep them around 15, 20 minutes just to give you guys the really practical information. I want to help summarize the research that’s out there into something that’s easy to understand. And my goal is that you can listen to this podcast and start making changes right away to your nutrition so you have some action steps to take.

And for now, podcasts are just going to be me talking. Maybe eventually I’ll get into doing some interview but it’s going to be me for all these episodes. And yeah, that’s about it.  You can follow me on Instagram www.instagram.com/andreadietitian. And these podcasts are also going to be video podcasts they they will be on Youtube. You can follow me in Instagram., Facebook, www.facebook.com/andreadochertyrd and I’m excited for this new journey.
